Anchors Winches & Windlasses
These are great automatic or hand cranked devices that allow you to retrieve your anchor with ease. Often you will find letting your anchor set is easy and getting it back is a whole new task. In order to assist boat owners to get back their deep-seated anchors several companies have designed winches that are for sea and lake goers. The sea-term “windlass” describes a horizontal winch that is found on marine vessels, in comparison to the vertical winches which are commonly referred to as “capstans”. The windlasses are typically found on deck of the boat/ship and have a shaft on either side for retrieval of the anchor. The capstans are normally found below deck with a vertical shaft for retrieving the anchor. In the past it has been found that smaller boats use windlass and larger boats incorporate the capstans.
The manually driven winches are similar to those winches found on sail boats that control the sail with the same manner crank system.
There are numerous powers supporting these winches and windlasses and choosing the properly calibrated one is made easy with Anchor Marine Supply. Be sure that you take into consideration the size of your boat, the weight of your anchor, and the common working conditions of your winch. These factors will help you choose the right power so you never come up short or max out your winch while getting “aweigh” (or clearing the anchor from the sea bottom)
